The pass circuit of Ulea begin to supply water to the channel of the Tagus-Segura next week (19/07/2012)

Technical difficulties due to lack of space in the area and the need for permits from landowners make more connections impossible as that proposed by the Central Union of Irrigation

The Segura basin (CHS) provides for the construction of the pass circuit of Ulea finalized next week, before the original deadline, which will start pumping water from the Segura river channel to the Left Bank of the transfer Tajo-Segura to partially restore the supply, interrupted by the landslide that collapsed late last June, one of the aqueduct tunnels under the mountains of Ulea.

The Segura River flow extracted from 3.4 cubic meters per second, will the channel downstream of the tunnel damaged in an open area where it already has placed a barrier that prevents water from flowing in the opposite direction.

Workers are currently installing the two pipes pass circuit of 1,200 millimeters in diameter, which take the water in the dam of Golgo (Ulea municipality) and the lead up to the shipping channel, through a distance of 500 meters in length and 30 vertical meters on land to which assignment has provided the City of Ulea.

The extracted water from the river bed will be promoted from the river Segura by two bombs of 630 kw each, which are being installed on the platform to be built next to the weir.

Both the immediate end of the pass circuit works like other actions initiated, including the repair of the tunnel collapsed, come to meet commitments under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, announced by the Director General for Water, John Urban, during his visit last week to Murcia and Alicante Vega Baja.

All actions are being implemented with the utmost speed to get to minimize the consequences of the termination of left bank canal of the transfer by the collapse of the tunnel, the most serious failure in the history of the Tajo-Segura.

Contribution of resources from La Pedrera and El Tinajón

On the other hand, with the aim of contributing to the restoration of supply, and CHS is adding resources to the shipping channel through the pumpback water stored in the reservoir of La Pedrera (Orihuela) and the driver of Tinajón station ( Ulea).

Last week I began to be pumped from La Pedrera 0.3 meters cubic per second, which is supplied provisionally over 5,000 hectares of irrigated land in the Vega Baja, which have their shots from the outlet of the siphon and reservoir Orihuela.

In addition, since last week Tinajón Drive (Ulea) gives the channel transfer rate of about 0.5 cubic meters per second.

These measures are supplemented by other actions, such as the implementation of surveys, feedback and making changes points to enable the temporary provision of new resources to meet the most urgent demands of irrigation in the affected areas of the provinces of Murcia and Alicante.

Other technical difficulties in connection

Moreover, despite the efforts of the Confederacy to implement various actions to carry an increased water supply to the shipping channel and its willingness to consider any other feasible option as it arises, resulting from technical difficulties lack of space and the need for permits from landowners preclude the connection proposed by the Central Union of Irrigation of the Tajo-Segura in the dam area in Ulea Golgo.
